Pets and Seniors – What a Perfect Mix!

Pets and Seniors – What a Perfect Mix!

There are many things to smile about at The Saybrook at Haddam, but the biggest smiles always appear when a four-legged furry friend is around.  We have several pets who call The Saybrook at Haddam “home” and we have regular animal visitors who brighten our days on so many levels.  You may have taken a Tai Chi class with Shasta, the visiting German Shepard, or spent time with Higgins, the spotted terrier, when he stops by to say hello.  Or you may have seen several resident dog-owners such as Angelo walking his cocker spaniel, Abby, or Hans and Heidi with their hound mix, Annie, or Janet with her little black cutie, Callie.  You already may even have met Skippy, the golden retriever that belongs to Kay and Charlie, two new residents.  And over in the cat department, you perhaps have seen Phyllis’s cat, Francie, who was the star of a recent advertisement from The Saybrook at Haddam, or Harry’s cat, Missy, or Barbara’s biblical friends, Adam and Eve.  These adorable pets are an important part of our community and we love having them around. Going Red for Heart Health in February

Going Red for Heart Health in February

Ah, the heart.  It is truly what makes us who we are – and what carries us through our lives (literally and figuratively).  Expectant parents jump for joy upon hearing that first tiny heartbeat in the womb. Many happy romances begin with the rapid beating of the heart. Major life decisions are often judged by listening to the heart (and, of course, the head!). Therefore, it makes sense that we must, in turn, love and care for our hearts. Continue reading “Going Red for Heart Health in February”

Hitting the Road with Seniors

Hitting the Road with Seniors

The Saybrook at Haddam’s weekly activity calendar is full of daily social, physical and cultural events that take place throughout our retirement community.   We are so fortunate to have a wide range of exceptional instructors and performers visit us regularly.  However, we are also fortunate to be located in a very beautiful and culturally rich part of the state – one that offers fabulous theaters, museums, libraries, restaurants, galleries, public parks, and more – so we like to plan trips and adventures away from home, too. As we rapidly speed through the colorful and brisk autumn months, many adults are faced with the task of ensuring their parents or elderly loved ones are prepared for the long winter ahead.  This can mean hiring a plow service, having groceries delivered, being sure there is plenty of home fuel on hand, and being sure someone is available to safely drive seniors to doctor’s appointments or to run errands.  Continue reading “Considering a Different Type of Snowbird This Winter”
